Hey! Wait just a minute…. I see something familiar… Those are MY boots! Alas, who can get mad at faces as sweet as these? Wait. Forget that last question.

A Day in the Life…

After a VERY late basketball game last night, practice was cancelled today. Hooray! Now we get a lazy, rainy day at home. No rush to get school done before we have to leave and time for the little things that make life fun. We have a blazing fire going in the stove, but the back [...]
And we're off!

Flower Child and I started our summer schedule today. She’s read about mosquitoes and is drawing a Van Gogh in pastels. LOL! Yes, she’s already doing things in her own order. We’ve been listening to Handel’s Water Music for the last week, specifically the Masterpiece Theater… oops!… Allo Hornpipe selection. I got a late start [...]
Charlotte Mason and Summer Fun!

In an effort to get back to the basics – the Charlotte Mason basics, that is – I decided to use Harmony Art Mom’s summer nature, music, and art studies with Flower Child for the next eight weeks. Should be fun! Looking forward to learning about Vincent Van Gogh and George Handel.
Call me an unschooling drop-out!

Interestingly, Sharon Astyk blogged about unschooling this week. She does touch on some of the things that were troubling me. I still like many of the ideas about unschooling, but it just doesn’t ‘feel’ right in our home school. Maybe it’s about me and my control issues and maybe that’s not a bad thing. I [...]

I ranted last week about Horizons and Flower Child. She hates it. And I mean *really* hates it. The repetitiveness is a huge struggle for her. Honestly, I am thankful that she managed to make it as far as she did with Horizons. I knew in the beginning that Singapore was a better fit for [...]
Visiting Russia Today…

We are cooking Russian today! Sometimes I jokingly refer to Sonlight’s Core 5 – Eastern Hemisphere Explorer as ‘Cooking Around the World’. On the menu? Russian Egg Soup (Flower Child is obsesses with Egg Drop Soup. She tries to find a recipe from every country we visit.) Apple Pie – This is more like a [...]
Our Story ~ Year 2

If our first year was the year of Speed Racer, our second year was the year of Molasses Slow. After being warned by many homeschool ‘experts’ that it is impossible to find the perfect curriculum during your first year, I decided to use The Well Trained Mind for the older two and send Flower Child [...]

Letting Go – Week #6

We’re still hanging on. It feels strange and completely foreign to me and it’s easy to see why some families give up early on in the game. It’s unsettling! Especially after homeschooling for nine years with Sonlight only – there hasn’t been any deviation. I’m sure the added stress of our Holiday – Thanksgiving, Christmas, [...]
Early School Days

This picture is my favorite. I’ve wanted to post it for a long time, but first I had to sift through all the old-fashioned photographs in boxes and FIND it! And… because they’re so cute… Even earlier school days:

I couldn’t resist snapping this picture. Big sister and little sister sitting side by side on big sister’s bed, working on their math. Flower Child has an old laptop sitting in front of her (it doesn’t even turn on) so she can be just like Princess with her laptop (which is running Saxon Teacher).
Finding the New Normal for 2009

Okay, there are a LOT of ‘new normals’ at our house. I honestly don’t know if we are the insane minority in the world of home education or if everyone else is like this and just doesn’t talk about it. Goals have been discussed. Lessons have been planned. Books have been burned set aside for [...]
Light bulb moment: 4-day School Week
Posted in General, tagged 4-Day Schedule, Flower Child, SL Core 4 on Wednesday, 24 September 2008 | 1 Comment »
Whew. I’ve been having a lot of those light bulb moments lately. With the teens hectic basketball schedule I always feel like Flower Child and I are rushing through school. Probably because we ARE! As I was looking at her Sonlight Instructor’s Guide today the 4-day Reader Schedule popped out at me. Why? When her [...]
Light Bulb Moment: Cursive Writing
Posted in General, tagged cursive writing, Flower Child on Thursday, 18 September 2008 | 1 Comment »
Yup. Had one of those moments this morning. I’ve been unsuccessfully trying to teach Flower Child how to write in cursive for the last two years. I brought out the book a handful of times during the year end up tossing it after only a couple of weeks. She’s now in 5th grade and can [...]
