I learned a lesson this week. It’s taken about eight years too learn it in a tangible way.
Eight years ago we began our homeschool journey. During that first year, I learned the importance of keeping good quality musical instruments on hand for our budding virtuosos children. I was no different than any [...]

I’ll be honest, living here has not been the idyll that I had assumed it would be. BUT, I have to admit this is the most beautiful place I’ve ever lived in my life. Even in winter. Our nature studies have become so much more fun because we have a plethora of [...]

I just read that Washington, DC schools spend around $14,000 annually on each student. And they aren’t even doing a good job.
Can I have the $14,000? Wow. What I could do with $14,000 for each of my children. What I could do with $14,000 for ALL three of my children!
Time for an impromptu spelling lesson [...]

But now we don’t know what to call it. Hmmm.
Oh, I’m talking about The Useless Room. Can’t remember if I’ve ever blogged about it before or not. We have this room off the kitchen in our ranch house that has no purpose, therefore we call it The Useless Room. It’s too narrow due to a [...]

We have an anti-bullying law here in Kentucky. Given that my kiddos have the luxury of avoiding the public school playground and school bus, I didn’t even know.
Until yesterday.
Ky. family sues school for failing to stop bullying
I hope they win!
I still feel that all this talk still falls short. Before we can stop children from [...]

Yesterday I read a post SOMEWHERE - don’t ask where, because today I can’t seem to find the discussion again - about the return to vocational education. It was on a message board, not on a blog. And I don’t even really remember exactly what the original post said, it was something to [...]

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately.
Princess(14) has decided to not graduate early and at the same time I’ve discovered that dual enrollment might not be an option for her jr and sr year.
Rooster(16) will be graduating a year later than we had anticipated, BUT it is possible that he could graduate on time [...]

I’m speaking about homeschoolers, of course. How dare they step outside the bounds of normal and actually interact with other children who are not their age! Can you read the sarcasm dripping off that sentence? I hope so.
Today I was reminded of one of the perks homeschooling sends our way. For many families who teach [...]

Or writer’s block? Who knows.
It does finally feel like spring, so I’ve been spending a lot of time outside. Weeding, planting, hanging out laundry, sitting and reading. Not so much time for blogging.
It feels strange not to be pouring over curriculum catalogs, trying to figure out what to do next year. We’ve been doing this [...]

It’s only 9:30am and our day has already gone topsy-turvy.
The phone rang at 7am, call from the post office to come pick up our chicks. The post office 30 minutes away. (I will never understand why we have a Big City address when the County Seat is MUCH closer.) So, that’s an hour. Fortunately, [...]

Schools are for Fish
Why is it that the people we need most in our country are the ones who get the least respect? Even doctors have been marginalized thanks to insurance companies.
I’d love to give a kick in the pants to certain IT professionals and remind them that garbage pickup can’t be outsourced to India.
