My philosophy of education has primarily been influenced by the works of Charlotte Mason . I was first introduced to the ideas of Ms. Mason by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay in her book For the Family’s Sake. Mrs. Macaulay wrote entirely about Miss Mason’s philosphies of education in her book For the Children’s Sake. We use Sonlight Curriculum as the foundation of our school and Ambleside Online for most of the subjects that Sonlight doesn’t cover.
I enjoy reading about almost anything. My favorite topics are theology, Charlotte Mason, homesteading, homeschooling, L’Abri (and the Schaeffer family), history, cooking, simple living, art, politics (ack! Did I just say that out loud?), and camping. When I’m not teaching or reading, I like to go backpacking and tent camping. Okay, we also like cabins, but hate crowds. The more remote and quiet the spot, the better.
Our family has lived in six states (plus I lived in one more as a child) and fourteen different homes in different towns. I prefer to live either right downtown in a big city where a car is unnecessary or far, far, far in the boonies without any neighbors. I hate the suburbs. I mean REALLY hate living in the suburbs. We now live on 22 acres in rural southern Kentucky and will probably stay here forever. Although we are rural, we live in a Congested Area on our road. We know this because the sign says so.
My husband was career military and most of those moves were courtesy of the United States Navy. I have two children who are typical third-culture Navy brats and one who is a die-hard redneck southern gal. Living in the civilian world, especially in the rural south, has been a huge culture shock for all of us.

Hi, I have been looking through blogs where the curriculum used is Sonlight because I am first year Sonlighter and I just want to be able to see how others are using it and I do think this will be the curriculum for us and I would like to communicate with others using Sonlight.
One other reason I picked your blog to look at is that my maiden name is Wingfield and it is not a common name so I was just wondering where your husbands family is from. I grew up and I still live in Mississippi but, my parents are from Steele, Missouri. My Grandfather’s name was Jesse Gene and his father was Jesse and moved to MO from Arkansas with his family I believe. I just thought I would write. Jessica W. Abel
