It’s here! I mentioned a few weeks ago that my wonderful dc committed us to the July 2008 Eat Local Challenge through our farmers’ market.  Fortunately, they showed some restraint and only chose the ‘one meal per week’ option.  Yea, the ‘one meal this month’ would have been a cake walk…  heck, we could have done one meal this month only from food raised in our small community.  I guess their choice is a good one.  It will be difficult enough to require thought and planning (thus a true learning experience for the young’uns), yet not so difficult as to be completely undoable.

My heart of hearts would like to have committed to eating local for the entire month.  There is a good variety of produce available both on our farm and at the market during July.  We’d not get bored, but it would still be tough.  Grain is the tough one.  Where, in Kentucky, does one buy locally harvested soft red wheat or hard white (or red) wheat that is triple-sifted to get all the pebbles out?  We’d have to eat a lot of potatoes.  I have solved the sugar problem!  Honey!  Not sure why I didn’t think of that before since we use honey for about 1/3 of our sweetening.

I also wonder how detailed we’re supposed to get.  What about salt?  Baking powder?  Baking soda?  Cornstarch?  Paprika?  Even in the 18th century spices were traded around the world.  Maybe I’m dwelling on this overmuch.  Maybe I should just get my behind into the kitchen and start cooking!

Oh… kinda hard to do.  I’ve left my poor family to fend for themselves while I vacation in Missouri….  Don’t worry, I’ll be back in time to plan our local meal for this week!  And I’ve decided to post about each meal.  I’m sure y’all will be awed and amazed at 1) my food choices, 2) cooking acumen, 3) blogging ability, and 4) attention to mindless details.
