Fall Break
Tuesday, 9 October 2007 by Elizabeth
Amazingly, both city and county schools are on fall break this week. Traditional schooled friends home for the week, sports practices and activities cancelled, the weather demanding we all head outdoors!
Tomorrow is a school day. We missed two days last week when we were in Nashville for a doctor visit. They’ve already made up one day on Monday and will make the other tomorrow. That leaves Thursday and Friday for fall break. Girl Scout meeting Friday, so we won’t head out for our trip until Saturday. Flower Child’s friend is coming over in the afternoon, after school work is finished. I’m sure they’ll work in their clubhouse in the barn.
Thursday we’ll be hiking at Barren River Reservoir, with the hopes of scoping out a trail to plant our very first letterbox. We’ve been Letterboxing since 2003 and this will be the first time we have placed a box. Actually, it will be four boxes. Before we moved from Philly, I carved a series of stamps based on the books by Eric Carle, my favorite artist and writer. We’re looking for an easy trail that can accommodate strollers, since this series is intended for young children.
On Saturday, we’ll be packing up the tent and heading to parts unknown for three days of tent camping. Possibly Land Between the Lakes. We’ll sit down and decide at breakfast on Friday morning. It’s always hard for us to choose a spot. Our ideal place is remote, shady, has a swimming beach, a good fishing hole, and plenty of trails devoid of people. To date, we still haven’t found the perfect place although several come close. In the end, though, if the s’mores are good the trip is a success! (I like to make them with cinnamon graham crackers…. YUM!)
Life is good.
