Winter Color

In the summer, God colors our world with a vast array of colors in the trees, shrubs, and flowers. There’s no need to miss out on that color in the winter!

I am preparing now for my winter color. Scarlet cardinals against the white snow. Blue Jays. Eastern Towhees. Goldfinches, house finches, and purple finches in abundance. Woodpeckers: downy and red-bellied. I love them all and can’t wait to start counting!
The two flat feeders are filled with a mixture of black sunflower seeds and generic birdseed mix. The large feeder is filled with black sunflower seeds only. The long narrow feeder is filled with thistle, as are the two bags hanging from its sides. We also have a plethora of different suets, some are in these pictures while others are hanging on a nearby tree. There is a finch block and a woodpecker block, and a large woodpecker block on the suet tree. In the winter, we’ll also cut up oranges and apples and put them in the flat feeders. And, depending on the number of pinecones Flower Child collects, we also sometimes do the peanut butter-roll-it-in-birdseed thing. Before we had cats, I would take a scoop each of regular bird seed, cracked corn, and sunflower seeds and scatter them on the ground for the ground-feeders.
I welcome any suggestions for other bird feeders and types. One can never have too many birds in the yard!
For a future post, can you share how you keep the fatso squirrels from emptying out the feeders in 12 hours flat? Or is it just me? I mean, the squirrels are cute and all, but hey, I bought that seed for the birds.
